How to deal with feeling guilty about taking sick days

guilt shame Dec 12, 2016

Like me, I am sure you have had those days when you wake up feeling like your stomach is going to punish you for the seafood the night before, with a blocked nose with the realisation that the scratchy throat was actually “something” that an early night could not fix, or just feeling absolutely exhausted and you decide to call in sick?

Guilt or shame?

Then comes a feeling of guilt which manifests thoughts such as: “I should not be ill.” “I have got so much to do.” “People in my team will really annoyed that they have to overtake the one or the other task.”

According to psychologists, guilt is described as “a feeling of responsibility or remorse for some wrong, offense, etc. whether real or imagined”. And it seems to originate in part as a result of evolution which has engrained within us that: Only if we are in a group are we able to survive, which means that we have to support each other…and if we don’t...

How to deal with mistakes?

failures mistakes Dec 04, 2016

Not too long ago I almost ruined a relationship with a business partner I had been working with for years. Why? I had made a mistake and had forgotten to pass on an invoice to be paid. Well, that can happen. But I did not act immediately. Because I had loads to do, I was just moving house, I had used this business partner for services for a club I was engaged with. A club I left with my move. Lots of might also call it excuses.

When I finally realized this was still pending, months had gone by. Did you ever experience such a situation? Ignoring a mistake for so long that admitting it creates such a cringing feeling of shame that you rather try to mask and forget it? This book, which never finds its way back to its owner? Or this call we promised to make to support a friend and it never happened?

I had ignored my mistake and now felt so ashamed that I blushed at only thinking about what I had done. So I postponed again. And meanwhile there was an awful...

How to get (and stay) motivated?

Do you have any of those people around you who always seem to be in a great mood, who seem driven and motivated at (almost) any time of the day and who seem to effortlessly achieve whatever they want to achieve?

I do – and I was wondering where they took all this motivation from. And even more importantly how they sustained it and never (at least not openly) seem to run out of steam. A feeling I can definitely relate to.

First step: Easy-peasy

I am sure you did the first step hundreds of times. So did I. Having an idea, a wish that sounded rather exciting. New Year resolutions spring to mind: I want to lose weight, I want to change my nutrition to a healthy one finally – oh, and I definitely go running every other day.

Just out of curiosity? How long did it last for you? Two weeks? Three? Or even a month? Then you’re really good.

So you see what I mean: finding this objective that we want to achieve is rather easy (I bet your list is as long as mine). But...

How to deal with feeling overwhelmed

Uncategorized Nov 16, 2016

Have you ever had the feeling of being constantly overwhelmed, having too much to do than is humanly possible to manage and did not have an idea about how to get out of the hamster wheel?

Probably a stupid question. In almost every call I have with business contacts (or even friends) I hear that the to-do list is longer than the day. Interruptions, unforeseen stuff and distractions do not improve the situation either.

And hey – I struggle with that too – so we are all sitting in the same boat.

About time to start doing something about it. Something that REALLY helps (disclaimer: I am not a magician – and if you expect a quick fix without doing anything you might want to stop reading. Can’t provide that.)

Start with stopping

What? Yup. Just hit the brakes. And look at what you have to do. You might say, hey, Claudia, I’ve got so much to do…I can’t possibly stop!

Please do it anyway. The...

How Asking Why Can Put You on The Path of Success

Uncategorized Nov 08, 2016

Have you ever wished to have this feeling of wanting to jump out of bed in the morning, super-excited to start the day – you can’t wait to throw yourself into the day’s work?

How often have you had this feeling? Well, yeah, I guess maybe on the morning of your wedding day (I hope) when you could not wait to get out of bed and start the rest of your life.

Or on the day you went on holidays. Or your birthday?

But the truth is that most of us don’t get out of bed with this kind of excited emotions on a daily basis, and many of us are actually dreading that the sound of the alarm will come too early and worst case you feel tired before even putting a foot out of bed (particularly when you check e-mails while still lying in bed).

What is the difference?

I can understand if you say that these examples are all related to fun and my private life. On the majority of days it’s work awaiting me once my feet hit the floor.

Well, let’s take a...

The 3 Most Effective Ways of Reclaiming Your Agenda

productivity Nov 02, 2016

Do you know the feeling: When you come into the office in the morning - despite your to-do list - you’re getting sidetracked more or less immediately?

By this colleague coming into your office with this super urgent request to come up with the latest numbers of sales for the last couple of weeks
Or you check your mails first thing in the morning (maybe even before you get out of bed?) and there is that urgent meeting and tons of mails from people demanding your attention
You get my gist.

What did you achieve today?

And when the day is over you’ve probably not finished half of what you had on your agenda.

Rather frustrating.

I almost bet you know the feeling. I did. And I am still struggling with it from time to time if I don't pay enough attention or let myself being distracted from my daily routines.

So just imagine you could actually get your important stuff done, you could work on your projects as planned and your overall productivity would sky rocket suddenly...

You are not as successful as you want to be? This might be the reason why.

beliefs success Oct 18, 2016

When I started out in my career in IT, some 25 years ago, I had a job in a newly founded sales division, which was quite revolutionary at the time: Telesales. Yes, that was quite a new model at the time, so our small team got a list (on paper – not in Excel) with names and telephone numbers, each of a certain geography, and another list of products which we were to sell.

Calling, creating relationships, developing a region, striving towards happy customers and building revenue.

My next few jobs included creating a product portfolio for IT storage products for another distributor and creating a startup business unit dedicated to newly developed backup products.

Fast forward to today: I am creating classes and training to help people achieve (the right) objectives and to be more successful in their daily lives.

Why do I tell you this? Because after my first job, where I successfully created something new from nothing I was convinced that I was a creator. In other words...

I was tired of wasting time in meetings - so I developed this

productivity Oct 10, 2016

Have you ever spent time in completely useless meetings where you came out and knew that you had completely and utterly wasted your time…or you notice a bit later, when nothing discussed in the meeting ever comes true or is being implemented?

Probably a stupid question...I bet you have. I certainly have, particularly during my time working for large corporates (but not only then).

I was even guilty of planning just that kind of really time wasting embarrassing!

Complex and overwhelming… heading towards burnout

Our world has become rather complex, super busy and overwhelming a lot of the time - what a contrast to 20 years ago, when things were so much slower, less information was streaming our way and we had simply more time to finish and accomplish things.  The level of urgency was a completely different one than we have today.

A high volume of long meetings increases the pressure we all experience today, and if they result in nothing or...

How to know what is important and what is urgent - with 2 key questions

productivity Oct 03, 2016

Rather want to watch a video than reading on: click here!

When was the last time you came into the office and while checking your e-mails in the morning – grave mistake by the way – all those demands from loads of people were streaming towards you.

Skype, messenger, whatsapp….slack….you name it- all channels where the “urgent” stuff comes in.

Your mailbox is a great place for others to get their stuff done

I know exactly how that feels. In actual fact my grown up daughter is absolutely great in trying to get my attention for supposedly really urgent stuff. Of course I am only a skype call away. Or a click on the send button in the e-mail. “I urgently need this document to be proof read…can you please do that today?” (subtext: because I want to get that done….and I know you are good with this).

All those communication tools are a perfect way for other people to get their agenda organized…

…and we can...
